Swine Influenza (H1N1) Information
|
The World Health Organization (WHO) has recently raised the level of pandemic alert to five on their six point scale, due to the recent outbreak of swine flu around the world. The purpose of this WHO alert is to trigger the implementation of “pandemic planning” by companies and other organizations. This involves implementing policies and procedures that enable individuals, businesses and communities to keep operating as safely as possible during a pandemic.
The Center for Disease Control (CDC) and WHO have offered the following opinions on the best methods to keep healthy during these pandemic times:
|
|
· Practice good health habits including getting adequate sleep, eating properly, and keeping physically active
· Avoid close contact with people who are sick
· If you are sick, limit your contact with other people as much as possible
· Cover your nose and mouth when you cough or sneeze, then properly wash your hands
· Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth to reduce the amount of germ exposure
· Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze.
· Also, alcohol-based hand cleaners are effective

Running a business, school, or any organization during times of pandemic planning can be more complex. It can include policies and procedures for hand hygiene, disinfection of surfaces, the use of personal protective gear, and determining how the workforce will be organized in a healthy and efficient manner. For your personal and professional welfare, please make every effort to stay informed about the situation in your local area and follow the advice of your local health authorities.
